Successful Career Starting at Juno

Jordan Birnbaum

New Yorker Jordan Birnbaum, 41, is about to close the second decade of his incredibly successful career with a new venture–the Secret Beatnik Party. Birnbaum fully intends that his new multimedia/comedy venture will follow on from his previous successes in the entertainment industry.

Before entering the business world, Birnbaum attained a BS in Policy Analysis, with a major in Consumer Economics and Housing from Cornell University in 1993. He spent one semester carrying out a field study for The American Red Cross, Ithaca Chapter, which led to his development and the implementation of the Homelessness Intervention and Prevention Program (HIPP).

No sooner than he graduated than Jordan was off to London for an 18-month associate program with technology based investment bankers D.E. Shaw & Co., and at their invitation. He took to this world like a duck to water and was very soon promoted to become a Trader, (Asian financial markets specialist) followed closely by the role of Co-Manager of the firm’s operations in live trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Advancement at Juno

However, at heart, Jordan is a man who loves media and entertainment and so returned to New York in mid-1995 as Director of Subscriber Acquisition with newcomer Juno Online Services Inc. Jordan soon proved his worth in Juno’s development from a start-up that had as yet to make a profit to becoming one of the top three ISPs in the US.

Birnbaum was first promoted to VP Business Development and then SVP Business Development, was the brains behind Juno signing software distribution agreements with Blockbuster Video and music mail-order services. Birnbaum also generated new levels of revenue through groundbreaking advertising technology that was patented and later much copied in the industry.

Birnbaum's entrepreneurial career takes off

The Secret Beatnik Party is formed

Early in 2001, Birnbaum invested in a Los Angeles start-up called Qtopia Events, Inc. that aimed to create a multi-media production studio in a large venue they leased at 6021 Hollywood Blvd. Qtopia opened shop in June 2002 as a venue for music and entertainment. By year’s end, it was clear to Birnbaum that Qtopia was in need of new management and he moved from NY to LA to take over its management.

After two years at break-even, and the attainment of a liquor license late in 2004, the venue underwent major renovation, morphed into Vanguard and achieved the success that Birnbaum had envisaged and went on to achieve. Vanguard led to a sea change in LA’s electronic music scene, becoming the destination for high-profile media industry events, concerts and premiere parties.

While at Vanguard, Birnbaum, who is himself a comedy writer and occasional stand-up comedian, as well as musician and songwriter, personally produced a comedy show for Richard Belzer of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit fame.

Which brings us full circle back to the Secret Beatnik Party. It’s a partnership between Birnbaum and Belzer that will produce monthly live and online entertainment programs to support a semi-farcical political platform. The live comedy shows they produce will have the added value of multimedia content and community networking features.
